We regrind, rebuild and hand scrape lathes, milling machines, CNC machining centres and boring mills, horizontal and vertical, here in Jet Park. The firm dates from 1956 and this has been our trade without a break since the late 1970s. We face slideways with turcite or vesconite and set the geometry to Schlesinger standards.

We do high-precision industrial grinding and keep several machines on it. Jobs run up to four metres in length.

Rebuilding of machine tools

SCHLESINGER

A full rebuild, back to the machine's original condition and accuracy. We fit the slideways with turcite or vesconite and set the geometry to Schlesinger standards.

We hand scrape slideways to Schlesinger standards, for true movement and accuracy.

How a rebuild works

01 Blue

We coat a master surface with engineer's blue and rub it against the work. The dye only takes where the metal stands proud, so the blue marks are a map of the high spots.

02 Scrape

We take those high spots off by hand with a scraper, a few microns at a pass. The crescent flake pattern it leaves is what holds the oil film a slideway runs on.

03 Face

We fit the slideways with turcite or vesconite, the low-friction facings a rebuilt machine runs on.

04 Check

Schlesinger is the published set of acceptance tolerances a machine tool is measured against. We check the machine's geometry to that standard and sign it off.

The firm

We have been in business since 1956. Uris Pavars took the firm over in the late 1970s to regrind and rebuild machine tools, and that has been the work ever since. Mr Pavars has since died. The firm passed into other hands and the work carries on as he set it up.
